Art in Open Spaces: It's Raining Cats & Dogs

Graffiti

-Testing My Hand at Art in Public Spaces with the Help of Graffiti.

Overview

As part of a college project, I was tasked with creating an art piece relating to a metaphor of my choosing. The project guidelines were extremely broad and were meant to push me to try something new, and try working in a medium outside of my comfort zone. I chose the metaphor “It’s raining cats and dogs” and choose to display this metaphor in graffiti form on the CSUSM campus. This piece was very popular amongst my professor and classmates.

Fun Facts

Over the course of several weeks, I created mind maps, sketched ideas, and researched various types of art before coming up with an interesting piece.
Although the idea of this project was to use just one metaphor, I also combined it with the metaphor "hiding in plain sight," as this project is invisible in dry conditions.

Other Details

For this project, I created a series of stencils in the shape of paw prints and a larger stencil that said, “It’s raining cats and dogs.” After "borrowing" a series of rocks from a campus path and then taping the stencils to the rocks I sprayed them with Rust-Oleum's Never Wet spray paint and waited for rain. Due to the water repelling nature of the paint, the rocks and the concrete that were sprayed did not become darker when wet and instead strongly stood out.
